MADDY MACLEOD
The Grey City
Berlin, the capital of Germany, was given this nickname because of the somewhat gloomy weather that usually blankets the city. I can attest to this nickname since each of the four days I was there it was cloudy and rainy. Nonetheless, this city proved to be very stimulating and thought-provoking. From the many museums, to the sobering history, to the delicious food, Berlin is a city worth visiting.
Germany's traumatic history was one of the most memorable parts of my visit to this country. I truly respect how the Germans do not attempt to rewrite history, hoping to appear innocent of blame for the atrocities committed during World War II. Instead, they admit to the injustices, and seek forgiveness of their wrongs, desiring to educate people regarding this horrific time in history. Some of the ways they do this are through museum exhibits, concentration camp tours, and even in the architecture of buildings such as the German Parliament.
Touring the German Museum, the Jewish Museum, the Berlin Wall and the Holocaust Memorial are just a few of the most intriguing sights and structures in this German city.
This country is also famous for its good eats, especially for its pretzels, sausages, wiener schnitzel, and currywurst. I can say, firsthand, that all of these dishes are deliciously exotic especially for an American like me.
